In February, Frederick Main Street conducted an online survey seeking information on why we live in Frederick, what concerns we have, and most importantly – how do we “Make Frederick Great Again?”
Of the citizens who participated in the survey, over half considered themselves in the “business/professional” demographic and the largest age group was 25 to 34. Both of those should be encouraging to our city. Frederick has both interested young people and interested business professionals!
Many respondents have always lived in Frederick, but there were several first time residents, and a few that have returned home. Citizens have relocated back to Frederick from: Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, California, Arizona, and many cities around Oklahoma.
The overwhelming response as to why we live in Frederick was simple; most of the respondents mentioned family, safety, and community. Proximity to family was the #1 response, but there were a lot of positive things other than family.
Respondents were supportive of shopping local, but several comments were made regarding product quality and availability being a concern at the local level.
The final question of the survey was: What is the one thing that you think is preventing Frederick from being “great”?
There were a wide array of answers to this question. It seems like the main underlying answer was how our community deals with good and bad change. There were a few concerned with shrinking economic opportunities. Negative attitudes about each other, businesses, and local government were mentioned.
So, how do we ”MAKE FREDERICK GREAT AGAIN?”
The most positive draws toward Frederick were the citizens and family atmosphere that our small town offers. Some of the negative comments have an easy fix: think positive thoughts. The next time you are shopping locally, eating out, or paying bills, remember, that the person helping you is somebody’s family and they are a local citizen too. More than likely, they are just glad to have the job and have the same concerns as you.
Smile. Be thankful. Say something nice. And, most importantly, have a positive attitude…this community gives us all of that for FREE!
